James E. Hinkle, M.D.
I
arrived in Atlanta on July 4, 1973 with my wife and three daughters
(ages 4,2 and 1) to join the Anesthesia Department at Northside
Hospital. Along with seven other MDs we served three other
hospitals in the north Atlanta area, and I became a traveling
anesthesiologist sometimes appearing at three institutions in one
day. In 1980 I formed a group to provide the anesthesia
services at what was then known as Shallowford Community Hospital
in Dunwoody and served as managing partner until 2001.
Because I did not want to stop practicing in the field for
which I was trained, I immediately went to work with my former
partners as a clinical anesthesiologist. I now work four days
a week, mostly in ambulatory surgicenters, but sometimes appear at
three facilities in one day. Sounds
familiar!
All of this has allowed me to have more time for serving two
non-profit boards in Atlanta and to have time for the family, which
now includes my wife of 40 years, Sally, three married daughters,
and nine grandchildren. If I can drop back to three working
days per week, I might have a chance at improving my performance on
the golf course.
