Michael Garrett,
M.D.
I was born in
Southern California and somehow migrated here to the south in the
early 70’s. I became fascinated by science and medicine at an
early age and enjoyed television shows like Cosmos
and
Nova.
I solidified my desire to become a physician during the later half
of high school and I attended Mercer University as biochemistry
major. I played intercollegiate soccer on a partial
scholarship, worked in the university’s science department as a
lab-geek, and on weekends worked at Dekalb Medical Center here in
Atlanta, Georgia. I earned my medical degree at the Medical
College of Georgia and was active in the student government and our
lampoon-like newspaper The
Cadaver.
I spent 2 years in general surgery in Chattanooga Tennessee, before
becoming enamored with Anesthesia and all its complexities. I
trained in Anesthesia in Houston, Texas at the Baylor College of
Medicine. My areas of interest were obstetrics,
cardiopulmonary medicine, transplantation service, pediatrics and
acute pain management. During my residency and training I
worked with the anesthesia team that cared for the patients of
Michael DeBakey MD at the Fondren and Brown cardiac institute. I
learned high risk Obstetrics and Trauma surgery at Ben Taub
Hospital and became well trained in pain medicine and critical care
at MD Anderson. I was the Chief resident during my training and I
have been awarded many honors including finishing 1st in my
residency training program out of 25.
In 1996 my wife and I returned home to Atlanta Georgia to
raise a family. Here I joined Dunwoody Anesthesia Associates, at
Emory Dunwoody Medical center. Since that time our anesthesia
group has tripled in size and we now offer anesthesia services to a
variety of sub-specialty surgery centers. We also will provide
anesthesia for Emory John’s Creek Hospital. Our group became
affiliated with Emory University in 2005 and we changed our name to
Emory Specialty Associates. I have served as Chairman of the
Ethics committee and have been the Chief of Staff at Dunwoody
Medical Center this past year.
I am a Christian father of 3, happily married for over 15
years. I am active at my children’s school, the Christian
Youth Theatre and our Church. I continue to enjoy providing
anesthesia and my current interests include acute pain management
with peripheral nerve blocks, PONV prevention, and painless
obstetrics anesthesia. My personal goal with every patient
that I take care of is to provide an anxiety, pain and nausea free
surgery.
